My Best Friend Is a Harry Potter T-Shirt
You probably saw the Harry Potter Is My Best Friends t-shirts at one point or another, I know because I was one of those guys. In fact, I used to be one of those guys who wore Harry Potter tees everywhere, with my skinny jeans and T-Shirt. No, I am not an racist and no, Muslims haven’t committed horrible acts and attacks in nation and even in town, but it does mean that Harry Potter is my best friends t-shirt. And every time I see a Harry Potter shirt, I think of my little cousin who is just beginning to date girls (and who just might turn out to be a witch one day). Anyway, I digress.
The thing is, you get so caught up in the Harry Potter hype that you can’t help but have to justify the things you see and say to yourself “Of course, he is my best friend!” Of course, the same reasons why people justify to themselves that they are their best friends (people who are brainwashed by pop culture) also justifies why people hate other groups and religions. Harry Potter is the granddaddy of these. People of a certain culture, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or race are judged on some vague cultural norm that was established long before Harry Potter came along and made it all real and understandable.
For example, if we look at the anti-American sentiment in the Harry Potter book, we can see how much of that comes from people who feel that America is their kind of country and who feel America is bad. However, if we look at the Harry Potter shirt, a person can proudly wear it to prove that they identify as a Harry Potter fan, or they can wear it ironically to show that they don’t identify with Harry Potter at all. That’s my best friends T-Shirt. I’m not sure what to tell the world, I guess that’s up to you. I’m just glad I don’t live anywhere near the ocean.
